Bomb Threats

Instructions for Students:

  1. If you are aware of a bomb threat or have information related to a bomb threat, call Safety & Security immediately (332-3357).
  2. When directed to evacuate a building, do so immediately. All students should go to the Henderson Campus Center (Shafer Auditorium) for evacuations. (If this is the site of the threat, students will be directed to evacuate to Brooks Dining Hall.) Students who live on campus should check in with their Resident Director/Area Coordinator. Students who live off campus should check in with the designated representative from the Dean of Students Office.
  3. If the threat is received in a classroom building, campus residents are required to first check in at Shafer Auditorium prior to going to their residence halls or their homes off campus.
  4. All campus community members are required to remain in the evacuation space until the appropriate emergency and/or College official approves their re-entry. Students are expected to follow all directions from emergency personnel and/or College officials and should not leave the designated safe area without notification.
  5. During the evacuation do not use cell phones, radios, or other small electronic devices. Do not handle suspicious packages. Leave lights on and windows closed. Leave all room doors closed but unlocked. Keep small bags that are your personal property in your possession.

Note: After any evacuation, report to your designated area assembly point. Remain there until the Emergency Building Coordinator or other designated College representative takes an accurate headcount.

Instructions for Employees:

Bomb threats are generally received in those areas that have the most contact with the general public. Employees working at these locations should keep a copy of this protocol within reach. If a caller phones in a bomb threat, follow these instructions:

  1. Obtain as much information from the caller as possible.
  2. Record pertinent information (example: caller's name, time of the call, type of bomb, location, time to detonate, reason for placing the bomb, etc.).
  3. The person who took the call should contact Safety & Security immediately (332-3357).
  4. The College employee who has agreed to be the contact person for the building under threat should work with other faculty, staff, and administrators to move the building's occupants to a specified evacuation site. Make sure students are aware of exit routes and safe areas/evacuation sites. Help disabled community members who require assistance evacuating the building.
  5. All members of the campus community should evacuate to the Henderson Campus Center (Shafer Auditorium). (If this is the site of the threat, students will be directed to evacuate to Brooks Dining Hall.) Check in with your department head upon arrival.
  6. All campus community members are required to remain in the evacuation space until the appropriate emergency and/or College official approves their re-entry.
