Chemical or Radiation Spill
In the event of a hazardous chemical or radiation spill on campus, take the following action:
- Immediately report the spill to the Safety & Security Office (332-3357) and to the Hazard Coordinator for the building in which the spill occurred.
- When reporting, be specific about the nature of the hazardous material and the exact location of the spill. Safety & Security will contact the necessary authorities and medical personnel.
- The Building Emergency Coordinator will evacuate the affected area at once and seal it off to prevent further contamination until Safety & Security personnel arrive.
- If you may have been contaminated by the spill, you should
- avoid physical contact with others as much as possible
- use available facilities (safety showers, eye wash stations, sinks, etc.) to minimize the effects of the contamination
- remain in the vicinity until Safety & Security or other emergency personnel take your contact information.
- If a hazard exists, activate the building alarm. Caution: The building alarm in some buildings rings only inside the building. You must still report the emergency to Safety & Security (332-3357).
- When the building evacuation alarm is sounded, walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and ask others to do the same.
- Assist the disabled in exiting the building.
- Once outside, move to a clear area at least 500 feet away from the affected building. Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrant areas, and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and crews. Know your area assembly points.
- If requested, assist emergency crews.
- Do not return to an evacuated building unless you are told to do so by a College official.
Note: After any evacuation, report to your designated area assembly point. Remain there until the Emergency Building Coordinator or other designated College representative takes an accurate headcount.
