Allegheny College will host the 2008 North Coast Athletic Conference Softball Championship as a result of the Gators winning the regular season NCAC title this spring.

Allegheny clinched its fourth conference championship and the top seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament after sweeping Wittenberg last week. Allegheny will host the top-four, double-elimination tournament on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3. The Gators begin play with a game against fourth-seeded Hiram at 12 p.m. on Friday. The Terriers are making their second-straight NCAC tourney apearance. Second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan will open the tournament against third-seeded Denison at 10 a.m. on Friday in Game 1.

Since the North Coast began sponsoring softball as a championship sport, four schools have claimed championships: Allegheny in 1998, 1999 and 2004, Denison in the years 2001–2003 and in 2006 and 2007, Wittenberg in 2000, and Ohio Wesleyan in 2004 and 2005.

Last spring, Allegheny claimed its third tournament title after shutting out top-seeded Denison, 2-0, in the seventh game of the championship. The Gators, who had entered the tourney as the third seed, won their first two games, edging second-seeded Wittenberg, 5-3, and Denison, 2-0. The Big Red earned a trip to the championship game after defeating Hiram, 5-2. Denison then defeated Allegheny, 4-1, to force the seventh and deciding game. Denison won the first two NCAC Softball Tournaments, which began in 2001 to help determine the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Wittenberg claimed the title in 2003, followed by Ohio Wesleyan in 2004, Allegheny in 2005, and Denison in 2006.
